Flower bulbs are perfect for any garden. It looks beautiful and colorful and you also help the bees and butterflies with it. The first step is of course to choose the many types of flower bulbs that you want in your garden. And then the second step, planting. What's the best way to do that? We will help you with that!
The difference between summer and spring flower bulbs
To start with, you need to know what type of bulb or tuber you are dealing with. Different types of flower bulbs have different requirements. The spring flower bulbs can be planted from October to approximately November. It is important that they are in the ground before the first night frost, because the spring flower bulbs need the cold to develop the flower. With summer flower bulbs it is the other way around, they can be planted after ice skating (May 15), when there is no longer a chance of night frost. These flower bulbs are not winter hardy and can freeze during severe frost. By spring flower bulbs we mean all varieties that bloom in the spring, such as tulips, daffodils or alliums. The summer flower bulbs bloom in the summer, such as dahlias, gladiolus or begonias.
Planting
So how do you plant the flower bulbs now? We will explain this to you in four steps.
Step 1: First of all, it is important that you have the right materials at home to plant the flower bulbs. You don't need much for this, a scoop is enough.
Step 2: Secondly, you will of course need the flower bulbs. Don't have them at home yet? View our range of spring flowering bulbs here , and our range of summer flowering bulbs here . Choose the place where you want to plant the flower bulbs. Take into account the wishes of the type of flower bulb you have chosen. Does this species need a lot of sun? Or would it rather be in a sheltered spot? It is important that you always remove the flower bulbs from the bag after purchase/delivery, so that air can enter. This is certainly important if you are not going to plant the flower bulbs right away.
Step 3: After you have chosen the spot, prepare the soil. You can choose to fertilize the soil additionally, but this is not always necessary. Make sure that the soil is loose so that the flower bulbs can root well. You do this by loosening the soil. The soil must also be well-drained, otherwise the bulbs may rot.
Step 4: Then the time has come, the flower bulbs can be planted. A general rule for planting most bulbs is 2x the width of the bulb for planting distance, and 2x the height of the bulb for planting depth. If a tulip bulb is 4cm high, plant it 8cm deep. After planting, press the soil a little and give it a little water so that rooting can begin. If the soil is already moist, you do not need to provide additional water. Now we have to wait until the first leaves appear.
So, in short;
Step 1: Gather the right materials
Step 2: Choose the place where you will plant the flower bulbs, taking into account the ''wishes'' of the flower bulbs.
Step 3: Prepare the soil by loosening the soil
Step 4: Make a hole in the planting spot and plant the flower bulbs. Press the soil a little and water if necessary.
Water after planting
After you plant the flower bulbs, they do not need much water until flowering. It is best to give the flower bulbs a small sip of water once or twice a week. Make sure that the soil does not get too wet, otherwise the flower bulbs will rot. If the soil is already moist, you do not need to provide additional water.
So, now you can get started with planting the flower bulbs.
And don't worry, we provide detailed planting instructions with every order! This way you can easily grab them when you are planting your flower bulbs in the garden. We wish you the best of luck and a wonderful, colorful spring/summer!
You can find everything in the Dutch flower bulb fields. In the spring these are flowers such as tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. In the summer you will find flowers such as lilies, dahlias and zantedeschias. The flower bulb sector in the Netherlands is undoubtedly a popular attraction. Many tourists come for the beautiful colors that the season has to offer. Selfies at the fields, family photos or just a lovely walk along the tulip fields, everyone enjoys it.
You will not always find this splendor of flowers on the bulb fields. Once every 5 years, the flower bulb fields are flooded, also known as inundation. Flooding is a natural and biological way of combating nematodes and root weeds. Nematodes, also called nematodes, are small worms that live in the soil of the fields. They are so small that you cannot see them with the naked eye. Although they are not harmful to humans and animals, they can cause damage to the flower bulbs, both the flower and the bulb. Before the field can be flooded, the land is leveled. Subsequently, small dikes are made or walls are put in place to keep the water on the fields. With a pump, the water is pumped from a water source nearby (usually a ditch around the land) to the land. The field remains underwater for about 12 to 14 weeks, after which the covered drainages are unblocked and the water can flow back to the same water source.
Despite the fact that those beautiful colored flowers cannot be seen for a while, this does not make the flooded bulb fields any less photogenic! There are many birds that come to the fields to cool off and float on the water. That makes for beautiful nature photos.
After 12 to 14 weeks, the land is completely healthy again and the bulb farmers are getting ready to plant the next crop for the winter, so that we can enjoy the splendor of flowers again in the spring!

]]>The dahlia is one of the most famous summer flowering bulbs. And rightly so, because these beautiful flowers come in all kinds of different types, colors and sizes. In this blog we explain how you can best care for the dahlias.
Plants
Dahlias are not hardy and therefore cannot withstand frost. That is why it is best to plant them when there is no longer a chance of night frost. About 3 dahlias fit per 1m2 and it is best to maintain a planting distance of 30 to 40 cm, with a maximum of 5 cm of soil on the bulb. Dahlias can be planted in sun or partial shade. After planting, give the dahlia tubers some water so they can start making roots.
Hibernate
Dahlias are therefore not hardy, which means that they cannot withstand frost. Once it freezes properly, they freeze to pieces. If you want your dahlias to bloom again next year, it is best to remove them before winter. Cut off any plant remains to 15 cm above the tuber, place them to dry briefly, wrap them in a newspaper and store them in a cool, frost-free place. Plant the dahlias again in April and enjoy the beautiful flowers again in the summer!
To water
Dahlia tubers are summer bloomers that love the sun. A place in full sun is no problem for them! The disadvantage of this is that you have to make sure that the dahlia does not get too dry. The sunnier the weather, the more water the dahlia needs. During hot summers, you may even have to water the dahlia daily. Putting a water sprinkler in the garden is therefore not a bad idea! Make sure that the soil drains well and that the dahlia is not constantly standing in a puddle of water. This can cause the bulbs to rot. Moist soil is fine, as long as it doesn't get soggy.
Care
Dahlias give beautiful flowers and will continue to do so all summer long with proper care. The trick is to top the dahlia; cut out the old, faded flowers. This stimulates the growth of new buds and you can enjoy the flowers all summer long. Dahlias also benefit from extra plant food from time to time. This keeps the dahlia strong and green. Although it is good for the dahlia, the plant food is not a must.
Pot
The shorter varieties of dahlias can be perfectly planted in a pot. Ideal for the small garden or to brighten up your balcony. Some examples of short dahlias are, for example, the Art Deco , Garden Desire or Wittem dahlia. The care of a potted dahlia is not much different than in the open ground. Nutrient-rich potting soil gives your dahlias the best start. Use a spacious pot to plant the dahlia in so that it can make enough roots. Also make sure that the pot is permeable to water, the water must be able to drain.
All in all, the dahlia is a fairly easy summer bloomer with which not much can go wrong. Have you become enthusiastic and would you like to try it yourself? View our dahlia assortment here !
