Perhaps you only know the Floratuin as an online webshop. But in addition to our webshop, we also have a physical store with a beautiful show garden. Our show garden blooms every year in April. How we plant this beautiful field, we will show you in this blog.
The planting
Most of the tulip fields here in Julianadorp are planted with a planting machine.
This machine distributes the tulips evenly over the bed where they are planted. Because our show garden consists of many small fields with different types of flower bulbs, it is not possible to do this with a planting machine. That is why our show garden is still planted by hand, the old-fashioned way! By planting the show garden by hand, you get the most beautiful effect, and the beds with tulips are neatly next to each other.
However, the tractor is used for planting. Behind the tractor hangs the transfer machine . This machine moves the soil. It removes the soil from one bed, so that the flower bulbs can be planted there, and with the same soil it covers the bed next to it that has been planted. On the back hangs a kind of roller that draws lines in the beds. The flower bulbs are planted on these lines. The bulbs lie in yellow bags on the tractor and are distributed over the next bed so that they can be planted.
Cover with straw
After planting, the flower bulbs are covered with straw for the winter. This is not only to protect them from frost, it also has a practical purpose. It also helps to prevent the sand from blowing away. The straw is laid with a straw-covering machine. This machine uses knives to push the straw between the sand, so that it does not blow away. Don't worry, the flower bulbs do not suffer any of this. They are not damaged and can simply grow through the straw.
The end result
After planting the flower bulbs in October, we can finally enjoy the beautiful show garden in April. The end result is definitely worth the work! The beautiful colorful field blooms at its best in April. Ideal for photos, selecting new varieties for the garden, or just to take a nice walk around to admire all the beautiful flowers.
