Order Leucojum Aestivum bulbs

The bulbs of the Leucojum Aestivum bloom white. They have drooping calyxes on high stems. In the Netherlands they are called summer bells, but they really bloom in the spring. They are reminiscent of very tall snowdrops.

The Dutch name for Leucojum is summer bells. This name is not well chosen because the bulbs bloom in the period from the end of March to May. The flowers of the Leucojum resemble a snowdrop. Leucojum and Galanthus therefore belong to the same family. Unlike the Galanthus, Leucojum has 6 petals that are all the same length. Another difference is that the Leucojum has yellow-green dots on the tips of the petals.

Plant the bulbs of the Leucojum in the sun or partial shade. Even in the deep shade they want to bloom. Because it is a bit cooler in the shade, the flowers will bloom considerably longer than in a sunny place. The flowers cannot withstand the heat very well. They like to be on a swampy bottom, for example in a place along the pond or a stream. They are good naturalizing bulbs. They also do well in a pot or container.
