The color of the flower of the Rococo tulip bulb is red. The outer petals start out green/purple but get redder over time. The large flower has a serrated edge along the petals. The heart is yellow as is the pistil, the stamens are black. The fragrant flower stands on a sturdy stem of about 30 cm. The Rococo tulip bulb belongs to the group of parakeet or parrot tulips. This group originates from various late-flowering tulips and from tulips belonging to the group of Triumph tulips whose petals are serrated. This combination has resulted in a tulip that is 40 to 50 cm. grows tall and has a very large flower with serrated petals. The bud is green until flowering. Only when the flower opens does the color become visible. In the black center of the flower are the bright yellow pistils. The flower can have a diameter of 12 cm. and comes in many colors. The parakeet tulips have a sturdy stem that is very strong. Nevertheless, the plant demands a sheltered place in the garden due to the large flower. During prolonged cold and rainy weather, the flowers can become tainted. The parakeet or parrot tulip has been declared the flower bulb of the year 2013.

The best planting time for Rococo tulip bulbs are the months of October and November. The tulip bulb needs some time to form roots before the first frost comes. If you plant the tulip bulbs before October, there is a risk of frost damage because the tulips will emerge too early in the spring. The planting depth is 3 times the height of the bulb. In order to bloom in the spring, a tulip bulb needs the indispensable winter. So a cold period, which should last at least 9 weeks with a temperature below 10 degrees Celsius. Tulip bulbs are best planted in well-loosened, not too wet soil. If they are too wet, the bulbs will rot and there will be no flower. They do well in sun or partial shade. Plant tall tulips in a place where they are protected from strong winds to prevent blowing over. You can plant the tulip bulbs in groups or scatter the tulip bulbs and plant them where they fell. The latter gives a natural effect.

The Rococo tulip bulbs do very well in a pot or container. One of the most important rules is: ensure good drainage, because tulip bulbs cannot withstand too much moisture. After planting, you can bury the pots and cover them with a layer of straw to protect them from freezing.
